The code that started it
March 2023. A customer’s truck came in with a P0420 code. In my head, I already knew the likely story: a tired catalytic converter, a worried owner, and a hope that the cheap fix would hold. Here’s the real answer: it depends. Some OEM schedules call for service in the 30,000- to 60,000-mile range. Others call for “lifetime,” and lifetime usually means “until the differential starts making sounds.” If you tow, carry heavy loads, off-road, or have a limited-slip differential, you should change the fluid sooner. If you drove through water deep enough to worry you, change it now.
I skipped a rear differential service on a used truck because 80,000 miles sounded fine. At 84,000, the rear axle was humming. Changing the fluid didn’t fix it. The wear was already there. A fluid change at 60,000 might have prevented it. That’s the difference between maintenance and repair: maintenance is for the problem you haven’t found yet.
Most people ask what interval. The better question is: what conditions has this differential seen? Same with spark plugs. Don’t ask which plug fits. Ask which plug the engine was designed around.
