NGK 3432 or RS7? A 5-Step Diagnostic Checklist Before Your Next Spark Plug Order

I'm the office administrator for an 18-person independent automotive repair shop. I handle all parts and supply ordering—roughly $200,000 a year across 12 vendors. I report to both the service manager and the shop owner, which means I feel it twice when a part doesn't fix the problem: once when the tech re-orders, and once when the customer calls back to complain.

This checklist came from five years of that. Three of our most common ignition orders—NGK 3432 spark plugs, NGK RS7 spark plugs, and ignition coils—generated more comebacks than anything else we stock. And in nearly every case, the part wasn't the problem. It was the diagnosis behind the part. Here are the five checks that now happen before any ignition order leaves this office.

The 5-Step Diagnostic Checklist Before Any Ignition Order

Step 1: Confirm It's Actually a Spark Plug Issue

The most expensive phrase in our industry is "order plugs and see what happens." If you've ever signed off on that, you know the feeling of seeing the same car back on the same lift within 48 hours.

Before you write up an NGK 3432 order, check the basics:

  • Alternator bad symptoms come first. Dimming headlights at idle, a whining bearing, a fluctuating voltage gauge—these are charging system issues. A dying alternator produces misfires that look identical to a bad spark plug. We test alternator output before we order anything now.
  • Timing belt noise when accelerating is a separate system. If the customer reports a rapid ticking or rattling as RPMs climb, that's mechanical. A spark plug will not fix a slack belt or worn tensioner. We check belt condition, tension, and pulley play before touching plugs.
  • Ignition coils cause cylinder-specific misses. Pull live data. If the misfire stays on one cylinder, it's far more likely a coil than a plug. Last year a tech flagged a 2017 Golf for a new set of plugs; I signed off on the order without a second thought. The customer came back three days later, still misfiring. The plugs were fine. The coil wasn't.

The rule we work by now: charging system, then timing, then fuel, then spark. In that order. It has cut our ignition comebacks by at least 60%.

Step 2: Pick the Exact NGK Part Number

Here's the thing: "NGK plugs" is not a part number. We get requests like that at least twice a month. And when we dig deeper, the correct part is rarely what the tech initially wrote down.

The NGK 3432 spark plug—also known as the ILKFR6B—is a Laser Iridium plug used in a wide range of VW, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes engines. It's a stock replacement, pre-gapped for most applications, and it's our best-selling plug. The NGK RS7 spark plugs are a completely different animal. They're a racing series plug designed for high-compression, modified engines. Different heat range, different electrode design, different gap check requirements. They are not "upgrades" for a street car. Putting an RS7 in a stock engine is how you get a fouled plug in a thousand miles. Not ideal, but workable if you know exactly what you're doing—and most of our customers don't.

We had a new technician assume the "7" in RS7 meant it was just a hotter 3432. The surprise wasn't the price difference between the two. It was how much downtime one wrong part caused. Now we confirm the full part number, the vehicle's engine code, and the build date before any order goes through.

Step 3: Cross-Reference Fitment (Don't Trust the Filter)

Online fitment filters are helpful, but they're not gospel. At least, that's been my experience with late-model European cars. Early in 2024, I assumed a "direct fit" note on a distributor's website was sufficient. Didn't verify. Turned out the same engine family had two different plug specs depending on the production month. That was a $200 order that fixed nothing.

What we do now:

  • Check the OE part number stamped on the old plug.
  • Match it against NGK's catalog spec for the VIN.
  • Note any modifications. If the engine isn't stock, the standard plug spec may be irrelevant—that's where RS7 and other racing plugs come in.

Also, let me rephrase that: correct fitment isn't optional. It's the whole job. The 3432 has a specific reach and heat range; the RS7 has a different one. They don't interchange just because they both say NGK.

Step 4: Check the Hardware Around the Part

The plug is only as good as the mount that holds its coil. We once replaced a coil that had been vibrating against a cracked bracket—a bracket that had come loose from the wrong mounting nut. The owner thought the engine was falling apart. It was just a loose fastener rattling around the wiring.

What I learned the expensive way: mounting hardware is "the cheap part" until it fails. We now check the coil bracket, ground strap, and retaining bolts on any car that comes in with an electrical fault. If the hardware looks chewed up or mismatched, we replace it with proper OE-grade fasteners. Separately, when we rebuilt our own shop's ignition testing bench, the structural engineer specified nVent CADDY strut nuts for the metal framing. It was a boring detail that made the entire rack solid enough for heavy tools. The same logic applies on a car: the right nut for the right job prevents the rattle that comes back on the next test drive.

Step 5: Confirm Price, Invoicing, and Return Policy

We buy enough plugs that a fifty-cent difference matters. Our current distributor quotes the NGK 3432 at $11.40–$14.50, depending on tier (wholesale quotes, January 2025; verify with yours). Actually, it's closer to $14.50 at the single-unit price—our negotiated tier gets the lower end. But pricing isn't the real gotcha.

Two things bit us hard in the first two years:

  • The vendor who quoted a great price on a full ignition set but couldn't provide a proper invoice. Handwritten receipt only. Finance rejected the expense report, and I ate the cost out of the department budget. I still kick myself for not verifying invoicing capability before placing that order.
  • An electrical parts supplier that wouldn't take back gapped plugs. If the car doesn't run right—or if a tech gapped a laser iridium plug with a $5 wire tool—the parts are non-returnable.

So now I verify the return policy and the invoice format before I hit submit. That's not admin paranoia. That's the checklist doing its job.

Common Mistakes We Still See

This section isn't meant to make anyone feel bad. We've done all of these. That's why they're on the list.

  1. Gapping laser iridium plugs by hand. According to NGK technical documentation (ngk.com), the laser iridium electrode is fragile. Bending the ground strap is fine on some plugs; on these, it's a red flag. Check the gap, and if adjustment is needed, use proper tooling.
  2. Ignoring alternator bad symptoms. If the battery light flickers at roll-in, the voltage is unstable. Fix the alternator or the wiring first, then do the plugs. Otherwise the new plugs just mask the symptom for a few days.
  3. Skipping timing belt diagnosis. A "timing belt noise when accelerating" complaint is mechanical. If the belt breaks, the engine can self-destruct. That's a five-day correction for a five-minute check. Don't trade five minutes of verification for five days of repair.
  4. Ordering RS7 plugs "just because." If it's not a track build, it doesn't need racing plugs. The 3432 or another OEM-equivalent is the right spec for most street vehicles. Racing plugs have a narrower operating window.
  5. Using whatever nut is in the bin. Whether it's mounting a coil bracket on a car or structural equipment in the shop, the wrong fastener will loosen and you'll do the job twice. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. Every single time.
