We sent the batch back, and the replacement units came with a different boot compound. That cost us a month of delays, but it saved us from comebacks.

The boot failed at 22,000 miles, the joint started clicking, and the customer had to replace the whole axle under warranty. If I'd checked the boot material before approving, I would have flagged it. If the trucks drive on dry pavement most of the time, an open differential is cheaper, simpler, and easier on tires. The limited-slip only pays off when you regularly face mud, snow, or performance driving.

So: What Should You Actually Choose?

So what's the bottom line? It depends on your use case.

  • And if you aren't driving in snow, mud, or track days, an open differential is often the more practical choice. If you do need the traction, get a real limited-slip differential set up by someone who knows the fluid specs.

I'll say it again: I'm not here to sell you a universal part. I'm here to tell you that specification beats marketing every time. A vendor who says this one is better has to prove it. A part number with a complete spec sheet is already telling you what it is. Trust the numbers, check the labels, and you'll avoid most of the comebacks that keep quality managers up at night.
