The Misfire That Wasn't Just the Spark Plug: NGK BPR6ES, 2309, and a Lesson for Every Small Shop
Last fall, a little four-bay shop called in with the kind of frustration you can hear in the first two seconds. "Got a customer's Civic here. It started missing Monday. We put new plugs in yesterday, and it's still missing. I don't get it."
The shop wasn't one of our regulars. Two lifts, one desk, a dog that barked at the doorbell—the kind of place that lives on repeat customers. Dave, the owner, had a blister pack open on the workbench and a diagnostic scanner still glowing with code P0302. Cylinder 2 misfire.
I asked what might sound like an obvious question. "What plugs went in?"
He held up the pack. "Guy at the counter said these fit."
Here's where I should explain what I do. I'm the person who checks parts before they go out to customers. At our warehouse I review roughly 1,500 line items a month. In 2024, I rejected about 2.7% of first deliveries from our suppliers for spec issues—wrong batch codes, labels that didn't match the boxes, packaging that looked way too old. For that mid-nineties Honda Civic 1.6L, our cross-reference listed NGK stock number 2309. That's the NGK BPR6ES-11—the plug people still call the BPR6ES in older catalogs. The middle digit, the "6," is the heat range. It controls how much heat the plug pulls out of the combustion chamber. Too cold, you get fouling. Too hot, you risk pre-ignition. It's not the kind of thing you guess.
I had Dave pull the installed plug and read the code off the porcelain. The part number was there, but the heat range didn't match what that engine called for. The application data on the box was wrong. It was a plug that screwed in. It was not the plug the engine was designed around.
Then I asked, "Did you check the gap?"
"They come pre-gapped now, right?"
To be fair, a lot of them do. The NGK 2309 comes from the factory with a gap around 1.0 to 1.1mm—right for the -11 designation, and right for that Honda per the spec sheet. But the factory gap doesn't save you if the heat range is off. This plug was set around 0.9mm and had a different internal core entirely. Close on paper. Wrong in the cylinder.
At that point I told Dave the fix was simple: get the right plug in there, gap-check it, and the car would probably be fine. I was half right.
The Plug Told the Real Story
I drove over after my shift—we're about ten minutes from the warehouse—because Dave asked me to look at the old plug from cylinder 2. He was holding it like evidence in a crime. It kind of was.
The tip was coated dark and oily. Not dry carbon. Wet-looking oil around the base of the insulator. I still kick myself for not seeing that from the phone call. A P0302 that stays after a plug change usually has a second story to tell.
"You've got a valve cover gasket leaking into the plug tube," I said. "Oil gets into the boot, works its way down, and the spark tracks down the side of the insulator instead of jumping the gap. "They were. But they weren't the whole problem."
That's the part that frustrates people. They want one clear answer. The truth was messier: wrong heat range, wrong gap, and an oil leak. Any one of those could have caused a misfire on its own. All three together made the car look possessed.
If Dave had gone with his first plan—replace all four ignition coils, about $600 in parts—he'd still have had the leak. The new coils would run fine for a while, then start misfiring again as oil soaked the boots. The customer would be back in a month, angrier and $600 lighter.

It was a 2005 Camry four-cylinder with a P0420 code. Catalyst efficiency below threshold. I told Dave what I tell every counter person: half those codes are a tired oxygen sensor or an exhaust leak upstream. A cracked flex pipe or a loose clamp lets in fresh air. The downstream O2 sensor reads it as a dead converter, but the converter is fine.
If Dave had quoted a direct-fit converter on the spot, he'd have been looking at $300 to $500 in parts as of late 2024, not counting gaskets or labor. The customer would probably have approved it because he had no reason to doubt. And if the converter wasn't the problem, he'd be back in two weeks with a lighter wallet and a darker opinion of Dave's shop.
Here's what you need to know: the question "how much for a converter" is always fair. The answer shouldn't be a price. It should be "let me check first." A good parts person treats diagnosis as part of the sale.
Small Orders and Strut Hangers
Dave also asked about an EBC brake rotor for a customer's Golf—a front rotor, nothing exotic, probably a $120 wholesale ticket. And then, almost as an afterthought, "Do you guys get strut hangers? My brother-in-law's crew needs a couple for a pipe support job."
A strut hanger, in case you've never had the pleasure, is a bracket that hangs threaded rod or pipe from a metal framing channel. It's not a car part. I didn't care. The rotor came from our brake supplier, the strut hangers from a different one, and the order was small enough that some distributors would've sighed into the phone.
We don't work that way. We have a simple policy: if you ask, we quote it. It cost us some time to set up, but so what. Today's small order is tomorrow's regular account.
Dave's order that afternoon totaled about $140: a valve cover gasket, a set of NGK 2309 plugs, and some cleaning solvent. Not exactly a banner day for revenue.

Dave texted at 8:42 on Monday. A photo of the old plug next to the new one. Then a video of the Civic idling smooth, scanner showing all monitors ready.

The Lesson I'd Pass Along
If you run a shop, or if you're a home mechanic doing your own work, here's what I'd tell you.
Confirm the exact part number for the engine. Exactly. Not "something close." Our catalog shows NGK BPR6ES spark plugs in the same family as the 2309, but the application data is what tells you which vehicle takes which. Same thread and same hex doesn't mean same heat range.
Gap is part of the spec. Pre-gapped at the factory doesn't mean pre-set for your engine. Check the gap when you install. It takes thirty seconds.
If the old plug comes out oily, fix the leak before you buy anything else. Coils, wires, plugs—they'll all fail early if oil is getting into the tube.
And when a customer asks how much for a catalytic converter, slow it down. Diagnosis is the most expensive thing you can skip and the cheapest thing you can offer.
Granted, I'm biased. I look at part numbers all day. But the takeaway goes beyond spark plugs. The parts business is a trust business. Trust doesn't come from a perfect catalog or a huge warehouse. It comes from being right when it matters—even on a $140 order from a two-lift shop.
I still kick myself for that batch in 2019. But then I think about Dave's Monday text, and it evens out.
