Dimension 1: The Sticker Price Trap

Let's start with the obvious: price per unit. An economy muffler might cost $80, while a standard model from a known brand might be $120. A 33% difference looks huge—until you factor in everything else.

In comparison, when I looked at an NGK CMR5H spark plug (a common lawnmower plug) versus a generic alternative, the NGK was $4.50 each. The generic was $2.80. At least, that's been my experience managing parts for a 20-shop chain. There's no universal 'right' answer—but there's almost always a mathematically correct one if you take the time to calculate the TCO.

People warned me about ignoring hidden fees. I didn't listen. The 'cheap' quote for a batch of 500 spark plugs ended up costing 30% more than the 'expensive' one once we added in installation time and early failures. I've been a TCO believer ever since.
